With the left flank of the US 7th Army relatively secure, German attention turned to the US right flank north of Strasbourg. The Germans probed from bridgeheads on the west bank of the Rhine towards the towns of Gambsheim, Herrlisheim and Offendorf. The Americans were forced to counter with one of the two mobile reserves, the inexperienced 12th Armored Division. This unit did not fare very well, but managed to slow the German probe over four days of fighting.
